Congress MP Manickam Tagore has submitted an adjournment motion notice in the Lok Sabha to discuss Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s controversial remarks on Dr. BR Ambedkar in the Rajya Sabha. Tagore has demanded that Amit Shah apologize unconditionally and resign from his post over the comments, which he believes undermine the principles of social justice and equality that Dr. Ambedkar stood for.
In the notice, Manickam Tagore criticized Amit Shah’s remarks, stating that they reflected “a deep-seated disdain for the principles of social justice” that Dr. Ambedkar fought for throughout his life.
The Controversy
The row began when Amit Shah made comments during a debate on the Constitution in the Rajya Sabha. He reportedly said, “If they had taken the name of God so many times instead of Ambedkar, they would have got heaven for seven lives.”
Tagore, in his notice, demanded that Amit Shah apologize “unconditionally” and resign, stating that Shah’s continued presence in the Cabinet was an “affront to the dignity of the Constitution and the people of India.”
Opposition’s Response
The remarks sparked strong reactions from opposition parties, including the Congress and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). BSP chief Mayawati also condemned the statement, saying it “hurt Baba Saheb’s dignity” and demanded that Amit Shah retract his remarks.
On the same day, members of the INDIA Bloc, including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and other MPs, staged protests in Parliament, wearing blue clothes as a mark of solidarity with Dr. Ambedkar. They called for Amit Shah’s resignation over the controversial remarks.
Call for Immediate Action
Manickam Tagore further urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Parliament to take “strongest possible action” against Amit Shah’s comments. He requested the House to condemn the remarks and demand Shah’s resignation from his position as Home Minister.
