Sealdah Court Sentences Sanjay Roy To Life Imprisonment In RG Kar Rape And Murder Case

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], January 20: The Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court has sentenced Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment in the RG Kar rape and murder case. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the accused.

During the trial, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had requested the death penalty for Roy. However, despite his claims of being “falsely implicated,” the court convicted him on charges of rape and murder. Roy argued that he was innocent and had been coerced into confessing. “I have not done anything; I am being falsely implicated,” he said. “You have seen everything, I am innocent. They made me sign whatever they wanted.”

Roy’s defense lawyer argued that even in the case of the “rarest of rare” offenses, there should be a chance for reformation. “The court has to show why the convict cannot be reformed and must be eliminated from society,” the lawyer stated. Meanwhile, the victim’s family lawyer demanded the death penalty as the maximum punishment.

The father of the victim, a trainee doctor, expressed his desire for the harshest punishment and reiterated the family’s commitment to continue their fight for justice both in the streets and in the courts. “We have full faith in the judge, and our fight will continue,” he said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, prior to the court’s hearing, expressed her government’s cooperation with the investigation. “We have always wanted justice for the victim, and the judiciary must follow its course,” she said.

On Saturday, the Sealdah Court had declared Roy guilty in the case, which involved the rape and murder of a trainee doctor. The victim’s body was found on August 9, 2024, in the seminar room of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested. The court framed charges under several sections of the law, including Section 64, 66, and 103/1 of BNS.

The brutal crime, which sparked widespread protests, has been a significant case in the region, highlighting the demand for justice for the victim.
