to Kyiv, Ukraine – January 2: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced the establishment of the “Grain from Ukraine” fund aimed at bolstering security and economic stability in Syria. This initiative was unveiled following a report by Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Agrarian Policy about their visit to Syria and the outcomes of talks held in Damascus. Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine’s commitment to supporting efforts that promote Syria’s stabilization, noting that cooperation with the Syrian government and international partners, including Europe and the United States, will be crucial.
Zelenskyy highlighted that the initiative would focus on both humanitarian and developmental support, linking greater stability in the Middle East to enhanced peace and trade opportunities for all involved. The announcement of the fund follows a recent visit to Damascus by Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, who held discussions with Syrian leadership, including Prime Minister Mohammed al-Bashir and Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaybani.
During the visit, Ukraine reaffirmed its interest in supporting Syria’s recovery and prosperity. Foreign Minister Sybiha announced the first delivery of 500 tons of Ukrainian flour under the “Grain from Ukraine” program, enough to support over 33,000 Syrian families for a month. This shipment is part of Ukraine’s broader humanitarian efforts to aid Syria, with further deliveries expected.
Sybiha also noted that Ukraine was eager to strengthen its ties with Syria, underscoring the potential for mutual benefits in the future. The announcement of this aid coincides with the restoration of diplomatic relations between Ukraine and Syria.
