The restoration of the film has been led by the Film Foundation’s World Cinema Project, founded by Martin Scorsese, in collaboration with Wes Anderson, L’Immagine Ritrovata, Film Heritage Foundation, Janus Films, and The Criterion Collection. The film has been restored in 4K resolution.
Originally released in 1970, Aranyer Din Ratri (Days and Nights in the Forest) is based on Sunil Gangopadhyay’s novel and starred Soumitra Chatterjee, Sharmila Tagore, Rabi Ghosh, and Simi Garewal. The film was nominated for the Golden Bear at the 20th Berlin International Film Festival, and is considered a landmark in Indian parallel cinema.
Simi Garewal, known for iconic roles in Do Badan (1966), Saathi (1968), Mera Naam Joker (1970), Siddhartha (1972), and Karz (1980), expressed excitement and pride in representing Ray’s legacy on the global stage once again.
The red carpet event for the film’s restored premiere is scheduled for May 19, 2025.
