Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India]: Affan, the 23-year-old accused of murdering five members of his family, attempted suicide by consuming poison but was admitted to a hospital on Friday. His condition has since improved, allowing the police to interrogate him and officially record his arrest.
As the accused remains hospitalized, a magistrate visited the hospital to grant police his remand.
According to Kerala Police, Affan allegedly murdered five people, including his 14-year-old brother, grandmother, uncle, aunt, and girlfriend, in Venjaramoodu on February 24. His mother, who survived the attack, is currently in critical condition at the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital.
Following the murders, Affan surrendered at the Venjaramoodu police station and confessed to killing six people.
Abdul Raheem Hassan Kunju, a family member who was in Saudi Arabia at the time of the incident, returned to Thiruvananthapuram on Friday.
Financial Crisis Behind Murders?
Sudarsan K S, District Police Chief, Thiruvananthapuram Rural, said financial difficulties may have been a motive.
“The family was in a financial crisis. The accused had borrowed ₹40,000 from a financial institution. He stated that the family was planning to die by suicide, but this claim is yet to be confirmed. The accused is stable now, but doctors say he will take 2-3 more days to be discharged. His mother is also recovering—she can speak but does not remember what happened. His blood samples have been sent for medical testing. The accused will be taken into police custody for further investigation,” he said.
Planned Murders in Three Locations
Police revealed that Affan tracked down and killed his family members and girlfriend at three different houses before consuming poison himself. He was then rushed to the hospital, where his condition stabilized.
Authorities continue to investigate the case to uncover further details and confirm the motives behind the shocking crime.
