Jerry Jones Shuts Down Micah Parsons Trade Rumors: “Absolutely Not”

The Dallas Cowboys’ ongoing contract dispute with star edge rusher Micah Parsons has once again taken center stage, with owner Jerry Jones making a cryptic remark that has raised questions about Parsons’ availability for the season opener. The team is set to face the reigning champion Philadelphia Eagles in what is sure to be a high-stakes divisional matchup on September 4th.

A Negotiation of Misunderstandings

The controversy escalated after Parsons took to social media to clarify a meeting he had with Jones in March. Parsons stated that while he engaged in a “back and forth” about a potential contract, he did not consider it a formal negotiation and had instructed his agent, David Mulugheta, to follow up. However, according to Jones, the conversation was a handshake agreement, similar to how he purchased the Cowboys back in the day. “The fundamental ‘I’m buying and you’re going to sell it to me for that range,’ that’s done, and those are done with eye contact and handshakes,” Jones said, explaining his philosophy.

This fundamental disagreement on the nature of their conversation has led to a complete breakdown in communication. Reports indicate that Parsons’ agent has not been able to make any headway with the Cowboys, and Jones himself has admitted that he hasn’t spoken to Parsons since the star defender requested a trade.

Jones’s Ambiguous Comments

When asked by the media if he was confident Parsons would play in the season opener against the Eagles, Jones’s response was far from reassuring. “No, absolutely not,” he said. “A big part of that is his decision. How would I know that? I’m just saying. But I’m urgent.”

The comment has been interpreted as a way for Jones to put the onus on Parsons, who is currently entering the final year of his rookie contract. While Parsons has been present at training camp, he has not been participating in drills, a clear sign of his dissatisfaction. The situation bears a striking resemblance to the team’s past contract standoffs with players like quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb.

Despite the public tension, Jones insists that the situation is a part of the negotiation process and has urged fans not to “lose any sleep over it.” However, with the season opener fast approaching and no end in sight to the stalemate, the question remains whether the two sides can find common ground before it impacts the team’s on-field performance.
