Dhaka:
The wife of Khokon Chandra Das, a Hindu resident of Bangladesh who was brutally attacked and set on fire, says she is still unable to comprehend why her husband was targeted. Speaking to media, Seema Das broke down while explaining that their family has never had any disputes with anyone in the area.
“We have no dispute with anyone. We don’t understand why my husband was suddenly targeted,” Seema said in Bangla.
Khokon Das has now become another name on the increasing list of Hindus who have been violently attacked in the crisis-hit, Muslim-majority nation, allegedly over religious identity.
“We are Hindu. We just want to live peacefully. The attackers were Muslims and police are trying to arrest them. I request the government for help,” Seema appealed.
According to her, Khokon recognised at least two of the attackers, which she believes is why they poured petrol on his head and face before setting him ablaze. He is currently fighting for his life in a hospital.
A local resident who assisted with translation informed NDTV that doctors recently performed surgery on one of Khokon’s eyes, and he is expected to be shifted to the ICU soon. He also requested anonymity, reflecting the fear many residents are currently living with in Bangladesh.
The Brutal Attack
Khokon Das ran a medicine shop and mobile banking business in a village around 150 km from Dhaka. The attack took place on Wednesday when he was returning home after closing his shop. In a desperate attempt to save himself, Khokon jumped into a pond, which helped extinguish the flames partially. The attackers fled soon after.
Locals rushed him to the nearest hospital, following which he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College due to the severity of his injuries. Doctors reportedly said he lost significant blood and required at least six units for stabilization.
Seema, who was seen tightly holding her youngest son inside the hospital, said villagers—including a Muslim resident—traveled with them to help. While he denied this being a communal incident, he acknowledged that investigations are still ongoing.
Growing Concerns Over Attacks on Minorities
Bangladesh has witnessed rising violence against minorities, particularly Hindus, under the Muhammad Yunus–led interim government, drawing serious concern from international bodies and human rights organisations. Despite official claims of ensuring minority safety, situation on the ground paints a different picture.
Last week, India expressed deep concern over the “unremitting hostility” faced by minorities in Bangladesh, stating that it was closely monitoring developments. Meanwhile, the Bangladesh government reiterated its commitment to protecting minority communities.
As Khokon continues his battle for survival, his family hopes justice will be delivered and meaningful protection ensured for minority communities in the country.
