Air Marshal Jeetendra Mishra has officially taken over as the Commander of the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) Western Air Command, a critical role responsible for the defence of India’s western borders.
Distinguished Career and Achievements
With over 38 years of illustrious service, Air Marshal Mishra, a fighter pilot commissioned in December 1986, has amassed over 3000 flying hours. He is a graduate of the National Defence Academy in Pune and an alumnus of prestigious institutions such as the Air Force Test Pilots School in Bangalore, the Air Command and Staff College in the USA, and the Royal College of Defence Studies in the UK.
Renowned for his exceptional skills, he is both a Fighter Combat Leader and an experimental Test Pilot.
Strategic Role and Contributions
The Western Air Command is among the most strategically significant formations of the IAF, tasked with safeguarding India’s western frontier and providing critical support during conflicts.
During his career, Air Marshal Mishra has held numerous key positions, including:
- Commanding Officer of a Fighter Squadron
- Chief Test Pilot at the Aircraft and Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE)
- Air Officer Commanding two frontline air bases
- Director (Operational Planning and Assessment Group)

Honours and Recognition
Air Marshal Mishra has been awarded the ‘Ati Vishisht Seva Medal’ and the ‘Vishisht Seva Medal’ for his exceptional service and contributions to the IAF.
Succession
He succeeds Air Marshal Pankaj Mohan Sinha, who retired on December 31, 2024, after a distinguished career spanning more than 39 years.
