CAQM Revokes GRAP Stage-IV Measures As Delhi’s Air Quality Improves

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has lifted the Stage-IV measures of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) following a marked improvement in air quality. The decision came after a review by the Sub-Committee on GRAP on January 16.

In its official order, CAQM stated:

“The Sub-Committee decides to revoke with immediate effect, its orders dated 15.01.2025, for invoking actions under Stage-IV (‘Severe+’ Air Quality) of extant Schedule of GRAP.”

Air Quality Status

Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) dropped to 302, classified as “Very Poor,” from the “Severe+” levels of over 400 recorded earlier in the week. This improvement has been attributed to favorable meteorological factors, including rainfall and increased wind speed.

However, CAQM noted that actions under GRAP Stages I, II, and III will remain in force as a precautionary measure to prevent further deterioration. The order emphasized,

“As per the Air Quality & Weather forecast provided by IMD/IITM, there is a likelihood of AQI to remain in the lower end of the Very Poor category in the coming days owing to favorable meteorological conditions and wind speed.”

Despite the improvement, Stage III measures, applicable for “Severe” air quality, will continue.

Educational Adjustments

On Wednesday, as air quality worsened, CAQM invoked both Stage-III and Stage-IV measures, prompting the Directorate of Education, Delhi government, to issue guidelines for conducting hybrid classes.

The official directive stated:

“All Heads of Schools of Govt., Govt. Aided, Unaided Recognized Private Schools of DOE, NDMC, MCD and Delhi Cantonment Board are directed to conduct classes in schools for children up to Class IX & XI in a ‘Hybrid Mode’ i.e., both in physical and online mode.”

This decision ensures educational continuity while addressing health concerns for younger students.
