Guwahati (Assam), May 31: In a major stride toward enhancing Assam’s regional and national air connectivity, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a series of new and restructured flight routes following a meeting with IndiGo leadership in New Delhi.
CM Sarma revealed that IndiGo has agreed to expand its network in key northeastern locations such as Jorhat, Silchar, Dibrugarh, and North Lakhimpur, addressing long-pending travel demands and infrastructure needs of the region.
Key Announcements:
- New Delhi–Jorhat Non-Stop Flight (September 2025):
IndiGo will launch a direct flight between Delhi and Jorhat starting mid-September 2025. This marks a milestone for Upper Assam’s connectivity with the national capital. - Delhi–Dibrugarh Flight via Guwahati:
The existing Delhi–Dibrugarh route will be restructured to include a stop at Guwahati, providing improved morning connectivity between Assam’s two major cities. - Morning Guwahati–Silchar Flight:
Responding to high demand, IndiGo will introduce a morning service between Guwahati and Silchar, enhancing intra-state mobility. - New Guwahati–Navi Mumbai Flight (Winter 2025-26):
A Guwahati–Navi Mumbai flight will be added in the upcoming winter schedule, further strengthening links between Northeast India and Maharashtra’s financial capital region. - Evaluation of Lilabari Airport Operations (North Lakhimpur):
IndiGo will explore possibilities of scheduled commercial operations from Lilabari Airport, benefiting the remote region of North Lakhimpur.
CM Sarma’s Vision
“These additions, along with the upcoming Delhi-Jorhat direct flight, mark a significant step forward in improving Assam’s air connectivity,” said CM Sarma in a series of posts on X. He described the move as aligned with the government’s broader vision to bolster transportation infrastructure and regional development.
He also expressed gratitude for IndiGo’s swift and positive response, stating, “I appreciate IndiGo’s prompt response and look forward to their continued efforts to deliver quality service to the people of our state.”
The development is seen as a transformational shift in Assam’s aviation map, expected to stimulate tourism, business, and ease of travel across the state and beyond.
