Delhi Traffic Police Unveil Comprehensive Monsoon Plan To Combat Waterlogging And Congestion

New Delhi, May 31: With the monsoon season around the corner, the Delhi Traffic Police have launched a comprehensive strategy to tackle waterlogging, traffic congestion, and road safety challenges across the capital. The initiative involves multi-agency coordination, technological upgrades, and personnel welfare to ensure a safer and smoother commuting experience for Delhiites.

“We are trying to do much better this year than before,” said Shashank Jaiswal, DCP Traffic Headquarters, while detailing the monsoon preparedness plan.

Key Initiatives Underway

  • Risk Mapping & Early Prevention:
Last year’s waterlogging-prone areas have been thoroughly identified. Teams are conducting on-ground inspections in collaboration with civic agencies such as the PWD and NDMC. The focus this year is on early identification and joint prevention efforts, rather than just reactive responses.
  • Blackspot Monitoring & Road Safety Improvements:
Jaiswal acknowledged that accident blackspots vary by severity and frequency. The Traffic Engineering and Road Safety Departments are continuously monitoring these locations and resolving root issues—such as adding pedestrian crossings—through inter-agency coordination.
  • Technology-Led Traffic Management:
A major step forward will be the rollout of the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), which will optimize signal timing based on real-time traffic flow. This is expected to cut down red light delays and enhance intersection safety.
  • Rapid Response Mechanisms:
Two-wheelers have been deployed to enhance response speed, and the control room is actively coordinating with field teams to resolve jams in real-time.

Internal Discipline and Staff Welfare

Jaiswal emphasized accountability within the force, stating, “Strict action is taken against complaints, including dismissals in serious cases.” At the same time, initiatives to boost staff morale and wellness are underway, including yoga sessions, counselling, and training programs to build resilience and operational efficiency.

Public Advisory

Commuters are urged to stay updated through official traffic advisories, especially during heavy rains, and to plan routes in advance to avoid waterlogged or congested areas.

As Delhi gears up for the rains, the Delhi Traffic Police’s integrated plan, blending infrastructure readiness, real-time technology, and human resource development, aims to minimize disruption and ensure safer road travel.
