As the murder mystery of Indore-based Raja Raghuvanshi deepens, his wife Sonam Raghuvanshi, who had gone missing with him during their honeymoon in Meghalaya, has been located in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, and is now in police custody. But her family and that of the deceased remain sharply divided on her role in the alleged crime.
Sonam’s Custody Sparks Dispute Over Alleged Surrender
While Meghalaya Police claim that Sonam surrendered, Raja’s brother Vipul Raghuvanshi insists otherwise. Speaking to reporters, he said:
“She did not surrender. We contacted UP Police after we heard she was found at a dhaba. Only then did they take her. We will not agree she is the accused until and unless she confesses.”
He also questioned the handling of the case, stating that Meghalaya authorities did not share post-mortem reports and failed to respond to the family’s calls. He demanded a CBI probe, alleging a lack of cooperation from the Shillong police.
“We kept calling the SP, and he never picked up our phone… We want Madhya Pradesh Police and the CBI to investigate,” Vipul said.
Sonam’s Father Speaks Out: “My Daughter Is Innocent”
Sonam’s father, Devi Singh, has fiercely defended her, calling the Meghalaya police and government “liars” who are “formulating stories.” He said Sonam had called her brother after arriving at a dhaba on the Varanasi-Ghazipur highway, and was taken by the police from there to a hospital.
“She cannot do this. They got married with the consent of both families. I haven’t even spoken to her. Why would she kill her husband?” he asked.
Raja’s Death: Honeymoon Turns Tragic
Raja and Sonam, both from Indore, had traveled to Meghalaya for their honeymoon. On June 2, Raja’s body was found under suspicious circumstances. While initial investigations were unclear, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma later confirmed the arrest of three assailants from Madhya Pradesh.
“Within 7 days, a breakthrough has been achieved… 3 assailants arrested, a female has also surrendered,” Sangma posted on X.
Meghalaya DGP confirmed that Sonam is the woman in question. Meanwhile, one more accused remains at large.
Demands for Transparency and Justice
The Raghuvanshi family’s demand for a CBI probe signals growing frustration with what they see as opaque policing by Meghalaya authorities. The lack of official communication, particularly regarding the post-mortem report and Sonam’s status, has only fueled suspicion.
The emotional case has caught national attention due to its mix of interstate jurisdiction, alleged betrayal, and uncertain motive, while legal experts point out that more clarity will only come once interrogation and forensic evidence are made public.
As of now, Sonam Raghuvanshi is not officially charged, and the investigation continues.
What’s Next?
- CBI intervention has not been confirmed.
- Meghalaya police are still searching for the fourth assailant.
- All eyes are now on Sonam’s interrogation, which could either confirm her involvement or exonerate her.
With the stakes high and emotions higher, the case of Raja Raghuvanshi’s death remains a developing story of love, loss, and a search for truth.
