Indian-origin entrepreneur and Republican leader Vivek Ramaswamy has stepped down as co-head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), just 69 days after being appointed alongside tech billionaire Elon Musk. According to a Politico report, Musk played a key role in Ramaswamy’s departure.
Musk’s Influence in Ramaswamy’s Exit
Sources revealed that Musk expressed his preference for Ramaswamy’s removal, citing tensions and dissatisfaction among some Republicans in Donald Trump’s circle. A Republican strategist close to Trump’s advisers stated, “He burned through bridges and finally burned Elon. Everyone wants him out of Mar-a-Lago, out of DC.”
Ramaswamy’s controversial comments about H-1B visas further fueled frustrations. In December, he criticised American culture for “venerating mediocrity over excellence,” suggesting this was why tech companies hired foreign workers. According to insiders, this was the tipping point that accelerated his removal.
Ramaswamy’s Plans for Ohio Governor
Ramaswamy has reportedly decided to run for Ohio Governor, which he plans to announce next week. A source close to DOGE noted Musk’s concerns about Ramaswamy juggling campaign responsibilities while co-leading the department.
In a statement, Trump transition spokesperson Anna Kelly praised Ramaswamy’s contributions to DOGE, saying, “His plan to run for governor requires him to remain outside of DOGE based on the structure that we announced today.”
Mixed Signals Before Exit
Despite his departure, Ramaswamy maintained that he was actively involved in DOGE up until the announcement. However, reports suggest he had done minimal work since December. Last week, he aimed to accomplish significant milestones before transitioning to his gubernatorial campaign.
On Monday morning, Ramaswamy shared a photo with Musk on social media, captioned “A new dawn,” attempting to frame his exit positively. However, the Politico report confirmed that his departure had already been decided.
No Comment on Musk Tensions
Ramaswamy has refrained from commenting on reported disputes with Musk. A source close to Ramaswamy claimed the two are now on good terms, stating, “The reality is that it wasn’t possible to run for governor and co-lead DOGE both at once.”
