The United States has welcomed the ceasefire understanding reached between India and Pakistan, calling it a display of “wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship” by both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The US State Department issued a statement applauding the leaders for choosing the path of dialogue and urging continued restraint and direct communication.
“We commend Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif on their wisdom, prudence, and statesmanship in choosing the path of peace,” read the statement.
US Offers Support for Long-Term Peace
The US reaffirmed its commitment to peace in South Asia, with President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio jointly calling for the “maintenance of a full ceasefire” between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
“The United States continues to offer its support in facilitating productive discussions to avert future conflict,” the statement added.
Vice President JD Vance Applauds Diplomatic Efforts
US Vice President JD Vance also issued remarks in support of the ceasefire, acknowledging the diplomatic push that led to de-escalation.
His statement followed Secretary Rubio’s announcement detailing US-led diplomatic engagement that helped India and Pakistan reach an understanding amid growing hostilities post the Pahalgam terror attack.
Backdrop: Operation Sindoor
The ceasefire comes after India’s Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7, targeting multiple terror hubs in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) following the April 22 Pahalgam attack that claimed 26 lives, mostly tourists.
In a joint military briefing on Sunday, Indian Armed Forces leaders outlined the scale of the mission:
- 11 air bases in Pakistan were targeted.
- Over 100 terrorists eliminated, including key figures involved in the IC-814 hijacking and Pulwama attack.
- Precise strikes on Markaz Taiba in Muridke and Markaz Subhan Allah in Bahawalpur.
Clear Message from India’s Military
Air Marshal AK Bharti declared the mission a complete success, citing destroyed camps and neutralized commanders.
“Have we achieved our objectives of decimating the terrorist camps? The answer is a thumping Yes. The results are for the whole world to see,” he said.
Vice Admiral AN Pramod issued a stern message:
“If Pakistan dares act again, it knows what we are going to do. That’s all.”
The ceasefire, following a powerful but restrained military operation, has been welcomed globally as a diplomatic win and a step toward long-term peace in the region.
