India Test captain Rohit Sharma and young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal have been included in Mumbai’s squad for their Ranji Trophy match against Jammu and Kashmir. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) announced the decision in a statement.
The match will take place from January 23 to 26 at the MCA Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy, BKC, Mumbai.
Key Highlights
Rohit and Jaiswal’s inclusion is the most notable in the 17-member squad. Both players were part of India’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy campaign earlier this month. Ajinkya Rahane will lead the team, while Angkrish Raghuvanshi has made way for Rohit, who is likely to open the innings.
Rohit’s last Ranji Trophy appearance for Mumbai was in November 2015, where he scored 113 off 140 balls against Uttar Pradesh in a match that ended in a draw.
Rohit’s Recent Struggles in Tests
Rohit has faced challenges in Test cricket recently. During India’s tour of Australia, he managed just 31 runs in five innings. In the 2024-25 Test season, Rohit scored only 164 runs in eight matches at an average of 10.93, with just one half-century.
As captain, Rohit experienced tough times, including a 0-3 home Test series defeat to New Zealand, India’s first home whitewash since 2000.
Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Excellent Form
Meanwhile, Jaiswal has been in outstanding form. He scored 1,771 runs in 23 matches last year, averaging 52.08, with three centuries and 11 fifties. In T20Is, he amassed 293 runs in eight matches at an average of 41.85.
Jaiswal last played for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy in January 2023 before making his Test debut against the West Indies.
