Pune (Maharashtra) [India]: A political storm has erupted in Maharashtra after Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan was attacked by an intruder at his Bandra residence, leaving him seriously injured. Opposition leaders criticized the BJP-led state government, questioning the law and order situation in the state.
Government Response
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar assured the public that the government is committed to maintaining law and order. Speaking to reporters, he stated, “CCTV footage is being examined, and a detailed investigation is underway to determine the intruder’s intent. Our government, including Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis and myself, is striving to ensure safety across the state.”
Opposition Criticism
NCP MP Supriya Sule condemned the attack, terming it “extremely worrying,” while pointing to an increase in crimes in Maharashtra. Sule expressed concern for the actor’s family and urged authorities to investigate whether the incident was linked to recent high-profile crimes, including the murder of Baba Siddique.
Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel also raised alarm, criticizing the security lapses that allowed an attacker to reach the 11th floor of a residential building. “If Mumbai is unsafe for a celebrity like Saif Ali Khan, how can it ensure the safety of ordinary citizens?” he asked.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut also criticized the state government, highlighting the prevalence of crimes in slum areas and questioning the safety of the general public.
Police Investigation
Mumbai Police’s Crime Branch has formed 20 teams to apprehend the attacker. Police are reviewing CCTV footage and questioning individuals in the area. So far, over 30 statements have been recorded, including that of actress Kareena Kapoor Khan, Saif’s wife.
Police sources confirmed that the intruder confronted Saif’s maid before the actor intervened, leading to a violent altercation. Saif sustained severe injuries, including a stab wound to his thoracic spinal cord.
Medical Update
Saif underwent surgery at Lilavati Hospital, where doctors removed a 2.5-inch-long blade from his spine and repaired leaking spinal fluid. While his condition is now stable, doctors continue to monitor his recovery closely.
Public and Political Reactions
The incident has sparked widespread concern and criticism, with many pointing fingers at the state government for failing to ensure security. As investigations continue, the spotlight remains on Maharashtra’s ability to address its growing crime rate and restore public confidence.
