PM Modi Invites President Trump To Quad Leaders’ Summit, Strengthens Indo-Pacific Ties

New Delhi [India]: During his visit to the United States, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended an invitation to US President Donald Trump for the upcoming Quad Leaders’ Summit, which will be hosted by India later this year, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed.

The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a free, open, peaceful, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region, emphasizing ASEAN centrality, adherence to international law, and freedom of navigation.

India to Host Quad Summit, New Initiatives Planned

In a joint statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated, “Prime Minister Modi looks forward to hosting President Trump in New Delhi for the Quad Leaders’ Summit, ahead of which the leaders will activate new Quad initiatives on shared airlift capacity to support civilian response to natural disasters and maritime patrols to improve interoperability.”

The statement further emphasized the US-India partnership as a crucial pillar for regional stability: “The leaders reaffirmed that a close partnership between the US and India is central to a free, open, peaceful, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.”

The Quad, comprising India, the US, Japan, and Australia, is a strategic alliance focused on fostering an inclusive, stable, and resilient Indo-Pacific.

Expanding Cooperation in the Middle East

PM Modi and President Trump also agreed to strengthen diplomatic cooperation in the Middle East, announcing plans for new initiatives in 2025.

“The leaders resolved to increase cooperation, enhance diplomatic consultations, and collaborate with partners in the Middle East. They highlighted the importance of investing in critical infrastructure and economic corridors to advance peace and security in the region,” the MEA said.

A high-level meeting is planned within the next six months, bringing together partners from the India-Middle East-Europe Corridor and the I2U2 Group to finalize new projects.

Boosting Connectivity in the Indian Ocean Region

The US acknowledged India’s role as a “developmental, humanitarian assistance, and net security provider” in the Indian Ocean Region. The leaders launched the Indian Ocean Strategic Venture to deepen cooperation and enhance regional connectivity.

Supporting this initiative, Meta announced a multi-billion, multi-year investment in an undersea cable project that will span over 50,000 km, connecting five continents. India will also invest in undersea cable maintenance, repair, and financing using trusted vendors.

Strengthening Security and Defense Cooperation

PM Modi and President Trump emphasized the need to build new strategic partnerships across the Western Indian Ocean, Middle East, and Indo-Pacific to enhance cooperation in defense, technology, energy, and critical minerals. Key initiatives in these regions are expected to be announced by fall 2025.

The leaders also vowed to advance military cooperation through multinational engagements. India will take on a leadership role in the Combined Maritime Forces naval task force, helping to secure critical sea lanes in the Arabian Sea.

Deepening US-India Strategic Ties

PM Modi and President Trump met for the first time since Trump’s inauguration as the 47th US President on January 20. During their meeting, Trump praised the strong US-India friendship, stating, “We have great unity and great friendship. It is important to remain united as nations.”

PM Modi congratulated Trump on his re-election and expressed optimism about strengthening the India-US strategic partnership with the “same bond, trust, and excitement.” Modi also highlighted his historic third consecutive term as Prime Minister—an event that has occurred in India after 60 years.

PM Modi is among the first world leaders to visit the US following Trump’s inauguration and was invited within just three weeks of the new administration taking office.
