Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Friday announced a ₹10,000 crore relief package for farmers across the state after unseasonal rainfall damaged crops in multiple districts.
Making the announcement on X (formerly Twitter), Patel said this year’s crop losses were among the most severe the state has seen in nearly 20 years. The package, he added, is aimed at alleviating the financial distress faced by thousands of cultivators whose harvests were destroyed.
Describing the package as one of the largest ever for Gujarat’s agricultural sector, Patel said the assistance will help farmers recover from the widespread damage caused by recent unseasonal rains linked to a weak weather system over the Arabian Sea. The rains affected large parts of Saurashtra, north Gujarat, and central Gujarat during the crucial harvest period.
The chief minister also announced that the government will soon begin a procurement drive worth over ₹15,000 crore, covering groundnuts, pulses (moong and urad) and soybeans at Minimum Support Prices (MSP) starting November 9. This initiative is intended to ensure farmers receive fair compensation and stable income despite the crop damage.
Patel noted that the announcement followed a comprehensive review of the situation by the state government. He and his ministers had personally visited the affected districts to meet farmers and assess their concerns.
“We visited various districts and spoke with farmers to understand their situation. The government stands with them with full sensitivity in this hour,” Patel said.
Officials confirmed that the unusual weather pattern triggered heavy rainfall over several parts of the state, damaging standing crops just before harvest time.
Reassuring the farming community, Patel said,
“I assure farmers that the state government has always been committed to their financial well-being and will continue to support them.”
The relief package is expected to include direct financial aid, compensation for crop loss, and support measures for replantation and input costs, officials indicated.
