For most high-level employees, being laid off after 14 years at a tech giant like Microsoft would be a devastating professional blow. However, for 49-year-old Tatiana Teppoeva, the moment she received her layoff email was a source of relief and “pure happiness.”
The former Senior Data and Applied Scientist immediately shared the positive news with her close friends. As she told Business Insider:
“My first reaction was disbelief and pure happiness. I picked up the phone and called a friend to share the news.”
The Layoff Was a “Green Light”
Teppoeva’s unusual reaction stemmed from a long-held desire to leave the corporate tech world and launch her own business. The stability of her established career was the only thing holding her back.
- Years of Hesitation: Teppoeva noted that leaving was not an easy decision after a 17-year stable career spanning both Boeing and Microsoft.
- Resignation Ready: She confessed, “For more than a year, I had been thinking about leaving to start my own company… I even had a resignation letter saved in my drafts, waiting for the right moment.”
- Gratitude for the Change: When the layoff finally occurred, she felt it was the catalyst she needed: “When the layoff happened, I felt it was a green light, and I was grateful.”
Launching One Nonverbal Ecosystem
Rather than seeking another corporate job, Teppoeva used the momentum of her departure to become an entrepreneur. She had joined Microsoft as a Senior Research Manager and rose through the ranks before her position was eliminated.
She launched her own company, One Nonverbal Ecosystem, dedicated to teaching business leaders how to communicate with authority and influence.
“Now I teach executives how to command the room and project the presence they want,” she said. The company specializes in helping sales teams, founders, and brands close high-ticket deals through nonverbal intelligence, personality alignment, and signal decoding.
Inspiration and Background
Teppoeva finds inspiration in her son, who successfully built a business in the construction sector from scratch. She shared that “Watching his journey encouraged me to take the same leap.”
- A New Adventure: She describes entrepreneurship as a new adventure, involving intense periods of work (sometimes over 16 hours a day) balanced by days where she does not work at all.
- Education: According to her LinkedIn profile, Tatiana Teppoeva holds a Master’s and a PhD in Economics from St. Petersburg State University, and she also holds two degrees from Harvard University, including a Master’s in Data Science. She transitioned from an early career as an assistant professor and research analyst before her long tenure in corporate tech.
