Orange Alert Issued In Himachal As Heavy Rains Lash Shimla; Tourists Thrilled, Locals Cautious

Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], June 29: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for several districts in Himachal Pradesh, including Shimla, Sirmaur, Solan, Kullu, and Mandi, as heavy rains continue to batter the region. The alert indicates the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over the next 48 hours.

Yellow alerts have also been issued for Kangra, Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, and Chamba, predicting light to moderate rainfall in those districts.

According to the Meteorological Centre in Shimla, multiple areas may experience light to moderate rainfall in the coming hours. However, intense spells of rainfall are likely in isolated locations across Bilaspur, Solan, Shimla, Sirmaur, Hamirpur, Mandi, and Kangra.

The IMD also forecasts rain for Kullu, Una, and Chamba, while isolated light showers may occur in the high-altitude districts of Kinnaur, Lahaul, and Spiti.

The alerts have prompted local authorities to increase preparedness, especially in landslide- and flash flood-prone zones. The continuous downpour has already disrupted daily life, with slippery roads, waterlogging, and poor visibility affecting commuters in hilly areas.

Residents are advised to follow official advisories to prevent loss of life and property. Local resident Malkhan Singh told ANI, “People are mentally prepared due to the IMD alert, but we must follow guidelines to minimize damage.”

While locals remain on edge due to ongoing monsoon-related challenges, tourists from Punjab, Delhi, and neighboring states are enjoying the cool weather. Manjeet Singh, a tourist from Punjab, remarked, “The rain and chill are refreshing. It’s a welcome break from the scorching heat back home.”

The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) confirmed that relief and rescue teams have been mobilized and regular updates are being shared with the public. Authorities have urged travelers to avoid unnecessary movement, especially along hilly roads and near riverbanks.

With more rainfall expected in the coming days, the administration continues to emphasize vigilance and strict adherence to safety measures throughout the monsoon season.
