Dubai [UAE]: Indian cricket legend Virat Kohli has equaled Mohammad Azharuddin’s record for the most catches as a fielder for India in ODIs.
Kohli Matches Azhar’s Feat
During India’s Champions Trophy opening clash against Bangladesh in Dubai, Virat completed two catches, bringing his tally to 156 ODI catches, the joint-highest by an Indian fielder.
Notably, Kohli achieved this milestone in 298 matches, 36 fewer games than Azharuddin (334 matches). With just one more catch, Virat will surpass the former Indian captain and hold the record outright.
India’s Top ODI Fielders by Catches:
- Virat Kohli – 156 catches (298 matches, active)
- Mohammad Azharuddin – 156 catches (334 matches)
- Sachin Tendulkar – 140 catches (463 matches)

How Kohli Reached the Milestone
- First Catch: In the second over, Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto drove a fullish delivery from Harshit Rana, but the ball flew in the air. Kohli, positioned at short cover, leaped and completed a stunning grab above his head.
- Second Catch: In the 43rd over, Mohammed Shami bowled a wider delivery, forcing Jaker Ali to attempt a lofted shot. The ball skied in the air, and Virat positioned himself perfectly to take a clean catch, leveling Azharuddin’s record.
Mohammed Shami’s Historic 200th ODI Wicket
Alongside Kohli’s milestone, Mohammed Shami scripted history by reaching 200 ODI wickets. The pacer delivered an outstanding spell of 5/53 in 10 overs, dismissing:
- Soumya Sarkar
- Mehidy Hasan Miraz
- Jaker Ali
- Tanzim Hasan Sakib
- Taskin Ahmed
With this performance, Shami reaffirmed his status as one of India’s premier fast bowlers, leading India to a strong start in the Champions Trophy 2025.
What’s Next for Kohli?
Kohli now eyes his 157th ODI catch, which will make him India’s all-time leading fielder in ODI catches. With several matches ahead, it seems only a matter of time before he claims the record outright.
