The 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to begin with an exciting clash between the defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on March 22 at the iconic Eden Gardens. The match will feature cricket fans’ favorite star batter, Virat Kohli, playing for RCB, making the opening game a much-anticipated spectacle.
In addition to the thrilling match, an opening ceremony will be held before the game. While the details of the performers are yet to be confirmed, Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) President Snehasish Ganguly assured fans that the event will be a grand affair.
“We will have an opening ceremony, though we don’t know who all are performing yet. A written confirmation is not there, but definitely, it will be a good opening ceremony as usual. Overall, it will be a beautiful IPL opening day for the people of Kolkata,” Ganguly stated. He also mentioned that the function is set to last 25 minutes, promising a short yet engaging prelude to the match.
Known as the ‘Mecca of Indian Cricket,’ Eden Gardens holds immense significance for both players and fans. Ganguly highlighted this, saying, “Every player wants to play cricket in Eden Gardens. Even many people just want to see Eden Gardens.” The ground is expected to be in top condition, with multiple pitches prepared for the tournament.
As for his personal support, Ganguly expressed his confidence in the Kolkata Knight Riders, stating, “As an individual, I will support Kolkata. Last year, they played well. I feel it is a better team than last year.” However, he acknowledged the tough competition, adding, “All teams are balanced in the IPL.”
Reflecting on the IPL’s impact, he concluded, “IPL has changed Indian cricket.”
