Kishtwar, Jammu and Kashmir — on Chisoti hamlet, a small community that was hit hard by a huge cloudburst that caused flash floods, rescue and relief efforts are now on their third day. At least 60 individuals have been confirmed dead since the disaster on August 14. More than 100 others are hurt, and many are still missing.
Delhi Police and hospital authorities say that nine people were quickly sent to AIIMS for treatment. So far, 46 bodies have been found and given to their families. There are still 75 persons who are officially missing. But local officials and people who saw it happen are worried that the real number of deaths could be significantly higher, with hundreds perhaps being swept away or trapped under the rubble.
Destruction: The Floods Wiped Out a Village
The flash floods that hit the last village on the way to the Machail Mata temple did a lot of damage. The murky water and debris entirely destroyed a temporary market, a community kitchen for the yatra, and a security station.
Officials said that 16 homes, many municipal facilities, three temples, and four water mills were destroyed in a sad report of the damage. The floods also took away a 30-meter bridge and more than a dozen cars, leaving the community in ruins.
Big Rescue Effort and Yatra Stopped
The civil administration has sent out about a dozen earthmovers in reaction to the accident. The NDRF has also sent in specialized equipment and dog teams to help look for survivors. The Indian Air Force has also put two Mi-17 helicopters and an Advanced Light Helicopter on standby for humanitarian work.
The flash floods happened during the yearly Machail Mata yatra, which has been put on hold. Officials think that about 15,000 people were at the temple when the cloudburst happened. The Indian Army built a temporary log bridge to get the rest of the pilgrims out of the area. So far, 4,000 have been evacuated.
High-ranking government officials, like as Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Union Minister Jitendra Singh, have gone to the destroyed village to examine how bad the damage is and to supervise the ongoing rescue attempts.
