Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah Unveils World’s Second-Largest Khadi Tricolour In Belagavi

Belagavi: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday unveiled the world’s second-largest khadi national flag at the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha, emphasising that the Indian tricolour is far more than a piece of khadi fabric — it is a powerful symbol of the nation’s pride, dignity, and self-respect.

According to the state government, this flag is the second-largest khadi tricolour in the world, following the largest one that was displayed in Leh in 2021.

While addressing attendees after the unveiling ceremony, Siddaramaiah reflected on the legacy of the national flag, reminding citizens that the tricolour has been a central emblem since the freedom movement.

“It is not just khadi fabric, but a symbol of India’s pride and dignity,” he said. “The saffron, white and green convey messages of national pride, economy, sacrifice and peace, and inspire patriotism among Indians.”

He elaborated that:

  • White represents peace and truth,
  • Green symbolises prosperity, and
  • The Ashoka Chakra reflects continuous economic progress and equal opportunities for all citizens.

Calling on people to honour the national flag, he said, “We must respect the national flag and view it with pride. Everyone should nurture patriotism.”

Siddaramaiah also congratulated Legislative Assembly Speaker U T Khader and the family of Vinod Kumar Revappa Bammanna from Kamalapur in Kalaburagi district, who donated the massive flag.

“Remember the Freedom Fighters”: CM’s Message

The Chief Minister urged people to recall the sacrifices of those who fought for India’s independence.

He highlighted that the freedom struggle, led by Mahatma Gandhi, has deep ties to Belagavi — a city where Gandhi had presided over a Congress session. Marking 100 years since that historic event, a new statue of Mahatma Gandhi has been installed next to the Suvarna Soudha.

Call for Harmony and Secularism

Siddaramaiah stressed the importance of building an equitable and humane society, insisting that hatred has no place in national progress.

“Humans must love one another and not hate. Only then can an equitable society be built; otherwise, building a secular nation becomes difficult,” he said.

He added that India’s diversity — home to multiple castes and religions — must be protected through the principles of secularism and mutual respect.

Reflecting on 75 Years of Independence

The CM said that even after more than 75 years of freedom, it is essential to evaluate how far India has progressed in ensuring fraternity, patriotism, and a humane social environment.

“Without these values, it is impossible to live as human beings. This mindset must grow among students and youth,” he noted.

He also mentioned that his government is working to strengthen constitutional values among young citizens by ensuring that the Preamble of the Constitution, drafted by Dr. B R Ambedkar, is read in schools and colleges across Karnataka.
