Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], April 14: Bollywood icon Kareena Kapoor Khan is set to share the screen with Malayalam superstar Prithviraj Sukumaran in Meghna Gulzar’s upcoming film Daayra. The project was officially announced on Monday following a brief team meeting.
Expressing her enthusiasm, Kareena took to Instagram and wrote, “I’ve always said that I’m a director’s actor… and this time I cannot wait to work with one of the finest directors we have, @meghnagulzar, and alongside the magnificent @therealprithvi, whose work I deeply admire. To my dream team, #Daayra ❤️ let’s do this.”
Photos from the announcement show Kareena and Prithviraj seated across from each other, seemingly engrossed in a script reading session.
In a press note, Kareena said, “As I celebrate 25 incredible years in Hindi cinema, I’m thrilled to announce my next film, Daayra. Meghna’s work in Talvar and Raazi has long inspired me. To be directed by her is truly a dream come true. I’m also thrilled to collaborate with Prithviraj, whose talent I deeply respect.”
Prithviraj echoed the sentiment, posting on Instagram, “Some stories stay with you from the moment you hear them. Daayra is that story for me. Excited to work with Meghna Gulzar, the incredible Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Team Junglee Pictures! Wish you all a very happy Vishu! #Daayra.”
Originally, Ayushmann Khurrana was slated to play the male lead, but had to step away due to unforeseen reasons.
Director Meghna Gulzar described Daayra as “a story that compels you to reflect on the society we live in and its institutions that govern us.” She added, “Co-writing this with Sima and Yash and exploring the greys between black and white has been creatively thrilling. With Kareena and Prithviraj, the story is bound to soar to new heights.”
Junglee Pictures’ CEO Amrita Pandey also expressed pride in backing the film: “We are thrilled to bring Daayra to life under Meghna’s direction. Her ability to combine powerful narratives with cinematic appeal makes her the perfect voice for this story. With Kareena and Prithviraj leading, it’s truly a dream team.”
The film is currently in pre-production, and is co-written by Yash, Sima, and Meghna Gulzar.
