Jaipur (Rajasthan) [India], January 30: The 2025 edition of the Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF) kicked off with a vibrant celebration of culture, art, and literature. On the inaugural day, celebrated lyricist, screenwriter, and poet Javed Akhtar launched his latest book, “Gyan Seepiyan: Pearls of Wisdom.”
During one of the sessions, Akhtar shared his insights on the significance of language, education, and preserving cultural heritage. He expressed concern over the growing disconnect from one’s roots due to rapid urbanization and modern education systems.
Akhtar highlighted the diminishing presence of traditional poetry, especially dohas (couplets), which are an integral part of India’s cultural heritage. “In this rush of urbanization, we are distancing ourselves from our languages. Language is not just a means of communication, but a vehicle for tradition, culture, and continuity,” he remarked.
He also reflected on the importance of preserving one’s mother tongue while embracing global languages like English. “Learning English is essential, but not at the cost of forgetting our own languages. We must not disconnect from our culture, history, and identity,” Akhtar emphasized.
The session also saw Rajya Sabha MP Sudha Murthy joining Akhtar and actor Atul Tiwari to launch the book.
The Jaipur Literature Festival, running from January 30 to February 3, 2025, is drawing literary enthusiasts, authors, and cultural leaders from around the world. Over five days, more than 300 speakers will engage in thought-provoking discussions on various global and national issues.
The festival’s opening featured a musical performance by renowned Carnatic vocalist Supriya Nagarajan, whose soothing Morning Music set a serene tone for the event. Supriya, also the CEO of Manasamitra, a UK-based arts organization, has performed across Europe, India, and Southeast Asia.
This year’s festival will host discussions on art, culture, and history, including sessions on the Ajanta Caves, Dutch art, and the Ojas Art Award, which celebrates Indigenous artists and their global contributions.
