Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 1: In a major push to bolster India’s creative economy, the Minister of Information and Broadcasting on Thursday announced the launch of the Indian Institute of Creative Technology (IICT) at the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025.
Positioned as a national centre of excellence, IICT will serve as a hub for the Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, Comics, and Extended Reality (AVGC-XR) sector. The institute is already operational and has partnered with several leading tech and media companies, including NVIDIA, Google, Apple, Microsoft, Meta, Star India, and Adobe, according to an official press release.
Established by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in collaboration with FICCI and CII, IICT is modelled after premier institutions like IITs and IIMs. It aims to nurture talent, encourage innovation, and set global benchmarks in the AVGC-XR domain.
“IICT will be a catalyst for India’s entertainment sector, enabling its global growth. Prime Minister Modi ji has allocated Rs 400 crore for the institute, and the Government of Maharashtra has provided the land,” said Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. “With the support of major global tech giants, IICT is set to become a world-class centre for creative innovation. WAVES and IICT will further position Mumbai as a global creative powerhouse.”
The first phase of IICT is housed at the NFDC Building on Pedder Road, Mumbai, and includes cutting-edge infrastructure such as Gaming and Animation Labs, Edit and Sound Suites, Virtual Production Setups, Immersive Studios, a Preview Theatre, and smart classrooms.
The second phase will see the construction of a dedicated 10-acre campus at Film City, Goregaon, further expanding IICT’s capabilities. Additionally, the government plans to open regional centres across India in the future to decentralise access and nurture local creative talent nationwide.
With a focus on training, incubation, R&D, innovation, and policy development, IICT aims to empower India’s youth and entrepreneurs while positioning the country as a global leader in the creative technology space.
