New Delhi [India], May 1: As tensions mount between India and Pakistan in the aftermath of the deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, the Pakistani military has escalated its deployment along the border, positioning air defence and artillery units at forward locations.
Defence sources revealed that Pakistan has deployed radar and air defence weapon systems opposite the Longewala sector in Barmer, Rajasthan. These deployments coincide with ongoing military exercises being carried out by the Pakistan Air Force (PAF).
The PAF is currently engaged in three large-scale exercises — Fiza-e-Badr, Lalkar-e-Momin, and Zarb-e-Haidari — involving major fighter fleets such as the F-16, J-10, and JF-17. These drills, which began on April 29, are also making use of Saab airborne early warning and control system aircraft.
In addition, elements of the Pakistan Army’s Strike Corps are conducting training exercises in their operational areas. The Pakistani military has also deployed its Airport Security Force to safeguard ground assets and ensure the security of air bases.
Further strengthening its forward capabilities, Pakistan continues to induct Chinese-supplied SH-15 howitzers, which are now being deployed in frontline positions.
These developments come in the wake of the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives. The incident significantly heightened tensions between the two countries.
On April 23, India’s Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) convened to review the situation. The CCS condemned the attack in the strongest possible terms, expressed condolences to the families of the victims, and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
According to official briefings, there are cross-border linkages associated with the attack, which is seen as a direct attempt to destabilize the Union Territory’s democratic progress and economic development following recent elections.
In response, the Indian government has vowed severe consequences for those responsible. As part of its countermeasures, it has announced steps including the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty, sending a clear signal to Pakistan over its continued support of cross-border terrorism.
