Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], July 1: The father of one of the accused in the alleged gangrape case at South Calcutta Law College has spoken out, asserting his faith in the judicial system and the ongoing investigation. The incident, which occurred on June 25 at the law college in Kolkata’s Kasba area, has sparked public outrage and political confrontation.
“The matter is subjudice and the investigation is ongoing. I have faith in the judiciary — the court will decide the further course of action,” the accused’s father told ANI on Tuesday. Responding to claims that his son had previous complaints registered against him, he added, “People are asking why he wasn’t arrested earlier. I trust the state government, police, and administration, and I believe the truth will come out.”
The alleged gangrape of a female student has led to the arrest of four individuals, including main accused Manojit Mishra. Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma emphasized the sensitivity of the case and urged the media and public not to disclose the survivor’s identity. “All necessary actions are being taken. This is a sensitive case. Please refrain from sharing any details that may compromise the survivor’s identity,” Verma stated.
Meanwhile, political tensions have escalated, with BJP leader Samik Bhattacharya slamming the Mamata Banerjee-led state government for what he described as a collapse in law and order. “There is complete anarchy and a breakdown of constitutional machinery. The administration is politicised, and all college campuses are unsafe,” he alleged, further accusing the police of attempting to tamper with evidence.
The BJP has also dispatched a four-member fact-finding team to assess the situation on the ground. The delegation includes former Union Ministers Satpal Singh and Meenakshi Lekhi, Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb, and Rajya Sabha MP Manan Kumar Mishra.
As the Special Investigation Team (SIT) continues its probe, public scrutiny remains high, and political narratives around campus safety, policing, and government accountability continue to unfold.
