New Delhi [India], January 13: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, accompanied by other party leaders, visited the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday to raise concerns over alleged distribution of goods in New Delhi Assembly Constituency and issues related to voter registration for the party’s Patparganj candidate, Awadh Ojha.
Speaking to the press after his visit, Kejriwal accused BJP candidates of distributing goods and money in Kidwai Nagar. “Yesterday, blankets, shoes, jackets, money, and spectacles were distributed. The local District Magistrate’s (DM) report claimed no such activities are happening, which makes it seem like the DM might be involved,” Kejriwal said. “We requested that the DM be suspended and these activities be stopped.”
Kejriwal added that the Election Commission had assured the AAP that these activities would be halted, and he expressed gratitude for the ECI’s response.
In addition to the distribution concerns, Kejriwal also addressed the issue of voter registration for Awadh Ojha, the AAP’s candidate from Patparganj, which had previously prevented him from filing his nomination. “The Election Commission has ordered to transfer Awadh Ojha’s vote, allowing him to cast his vote and file his nomination,” Kejriwal said.
Ojha, who will compete against BJP’s Ravinder Singh Negi and Congress’ Anil Kumar in Patparganj, will now be able to proceed with his candidacy.
Kejriwal was joined by Delhi CM Atishi, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann, Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, and Raghav Chadha during his visit to the Election Commission.
The Delhi Assembly Elections will be held in a single phase on February 5, with vote counting scheduled for February 8. The last date for filing nominations is January 17, followed by scrutiny on January 18 and the withdrawal deadline on January 20.
