New Delhi-: Delhi’s historic charm may soon become the backdrop for weddings and cultural events, as the Delhi Government is finalising a plan to open select heritage monuments for private and cultural functions under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
Officials confirmed that nearly 80 monuments managed by the Delhi Archaeology Department are being considered for inclusion in the upcoming scheme, which will allow individuals to book heritage sites for weddings, receptions, and cultural programmes.
“The plan is still in its early stages, and discussions are underway on implementation and venue selection,” an official said. “Extra security measures will be introduced to ensure the structures are not damaged during events.”
Historic Monuments on the Tentative List
Among the shortlisted sites are several culturally significant landmarks that capture Delhi’s Mughal, colonial, and Indo-Islamic heritage. These include:
- Mutiny Memorial (Northern Ridge): Built in 1863 to commemorate soldiers who died during the Revolt of 1857.
- Dara Shikoh Library (Kashmere Gate): Once the residence of Mughal prince Dara Shikoh, later used as a British administrative office.
- Maqbara Paik (near GTK Bus Depot): A Mughal-era tomb believed to belong to an imperial courier.
- Lodi-era Tomb in Sadhana Enclave: A fine example of early Indo-Islamic architecture.
- Pavilions at Qudsia Garden: Part of an 18th-century palace complex built by Qudsia Begum, wife of Emperor Muhammad Shah.
- Medieval Tombs in Vasant Vihar: Remnants from the Sayyid and Lodi periods.
- Ghalib Haveli (Chandni Chowk): The 19th-century home of legendary Urdu poet Mirza Ghalib.
- Bara Lao ka Gumbad (South Delhi): A 14th-century domed structure believed to have served as a traveller’s rest house.
If approved, these venues will soon offer a unique blend of history and celebration, merging Delhi’s architectural legacy with modern-day cultural experiences.
Security, Preservation, and Tax Relaxation
Officials emphasised that preservation of these monuments will remain the top priority.
“We plan to deploy special teams and strict guidelines to prevent any damage to heritage structures,” an official told PTI.
The government is also considering relaxing GST on booking fees to make such heritage venues more accessible for citizens.
The initiative is expected to generate revenue for monument upkeep and promote cultural tourism by giving visitors and locals alike a chance to engage with Delhi’s history in new ways.
Infrastructure and Accessibility Plans
Delhi Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra—who first floated the idea—said that his department is working on building basic infrastructure, including sanitation, lighting, parking, and accessibility improvements.
“The goal is to make these sites more public-friendly without compromising their historic value,” Mishra said.
He added that once the framework is approved, private partners will be invited to manage event logistics under the PPP model, ensuring both revenue generation and heritage protection.
A New Chapter in Heritage Tourism
If implemented, the scheme could turn Delhi into a heritage wedding destination, much like Jaipur and Udaipur, offering citizens the chance to celebrate personal milestones amid centuries-old architecture.
Experts believe this could set a precedent for other Indian cities to follow, balancing heritage conservation with responsible tourism and event management.
