Delhi Govt Launches ‘Atal Canteen’ Scheme: Nutritious Meals At ₹5

New Delhi: In a move aimed at tackling urban hunger and supporting low-income families, the Delhi Government on Friday announced the launch of its ambitious ‘Atal Canteen’ scheme — offering nutritious, hot meals at just ₹5 across 100 locations in the national capital.

The initiative, scheduled to commence on December 25, coinciding with the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, seeks to provide “food with dignity” to daily wage earners, labourers, and economically weaker citizens.

“Atal Canteen will become the soul of Delhi — a place where no one should have to sleep hungry,” said Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, announcing the programme.

Affordable, Nutritious Meals for All

Each Atal Canteen will serve two meals a day, consisting of dal-chawal, roti, and vegetables, catering to around 1,000 people daily.
The Delhi Government will subsidise the operational cost to maintain the fixed price of ₹5 per meal.

Officials confirmed that an inter-departmental committee has already finalised locations, menus, and operational guidelines for the first phase of 100 canteens.

Digital Tokens and CCTV for Transparency

To ensure transparency and prevent misuse, the distribution system will use digital meal tokens, replacing manual coupons.
All centres will be monitored in real time through CCTV cameras, connected to the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board’s (DUSIB) digital control platform.

“Technology and transparency are at the heart of this initiative,” a senior official said. “Real-time monitoring will ensure accountability and quality at every level.”

Strict Hygiene and Safety Measures

The canteen kitchens will be fitted with LPG-based stoves, industrial RO water systems, and cold storage units.
Food quality will be tested regularly by FSSAI and NABL-accredited laboratories.

Operators will also be required to submit monthly hygiene and safety reports, including staff health checks and cleanliness audits.

A Tribute to Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s Vision

Chief Minister Gupta said the scheme draws inspiration from Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s belief that “poverty is not merely a lack of money, but a lack of opportunity.”
The initiative, she added, aligns with the government’s vision of ensuring access to nutritious food without charity or compromise of dignity.

“This is not charity — it’s fairness,” Gupta remarked. “The workers who build our city shouldn’t have to skip meals to survive in it.”

Expansion Plans and Employment Opportunities

Following the launch, the government plans to expand the canteen network based on public demand and community feedback.
Officials also noted that the initiative will generate employment, as self-help groups and community kitchens will be engaged to manage the canteens.
