Delhi Doctors Save 20-Year-Old Who Swallowed Razor After Family Dispute

In a rare and complex medical case, a 20-year-old man battling depression and suicidal tendencies swallowed a shaving razor after a quarrel with his father. Doctors at a private hospital in Delhi successfully treated him through a delicate two-step surgical procedure.

Case Details

  • Mental Health Context:
The young man, struggling with depression, ingested the razor in two parts—a blade holder and a handle. His father also suffers from mental health issues, highlighting the family’s psychological challenges.
  • Medical Diagnosis:
Scans revealed the blade holder lodged in his stomach while the handle had moved to the large intestine.

Surgical Intervention

A team of skilled surgeons, led by Dr. Tarun Mittal, performed a two-step operation:

  1. Laparotomy: The stomach was opened to safely remove the blade.
  2. Sigmoidoscopy: The handle in the colon was carefully manipulated and extracted.

“This was a peculiar case, not only because of the nature of the foreign body but also the psychological factors at play. Addressing such cases requires both good medical care and sensitivity to the patient’s mental health,” said Dr. Mittal.

Post-Surgery Care and Mental Health Focus

  • The patient has recovered physically and is now being referred for counseling to address his depression and suicidal tendencies.
  • His family also plans to seek mental health support for his father.

Dr. Mittal emphasized the importance of early mental health intervention and reducing stigma around mental illness, saying, “Many people hesitate to seek care due to fear or shame, which can lead to dangerous situations.”

Family’s Gratitude

The patient’s family expressed their heartfelt thanks to the medical team. “We are deeply relieved and thankful to the doctors for their prompt action and care,” said the young man’s mother.

Dr. Ajay Swaroop, Chairman at Sir Gangaram Hospital, commended the surgical team, saying, “I compliment the surgical team for this delicate surgery. At Sir Gangaram Hospital, we are committed to a holistic approach, and mental health issues are a concern to us.”
