New Delhi: The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) has initiated a detailed investigation into alleged irregularities in the renovation and luxury additions to 6 Flagstaff Bungalow, the former official residence of ex-Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
The CVC has directed the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) to conduct an in-depth probe into allegations that building norms were violated to construct a lavish mansion, dubbed ‘Sheesh Mahal,’ covering 40,000 square yards (8 acres).
Complaint and Investigation Timeline
- October 14, 2024: BJP leader Vijender Gupta filed a complaint with the CVC, alleging illegal construction and financial irregularities in the renovation of Kejriwal’s residence.
- October 16, 2024: The CVC registered the complaint for examination.
- November 2024: The CVC forwarded the complaint to the CPWD for investigation.
- November 5, 2024: The CVC acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations regarding extravagant spending on luxury additions.
- December 5, 2024: The CPWD’s Chief Vigilance Officer (CVO) submitted a factual report based on Vijender Gupta’s complaint.
- February 13, 2025: The CVC ordered a detailed probe following the CPWD’s report.
Allegations of Irregularities
According to Vijender Gupta’s complaint, Kejriwal’s residence renovation violated multiple building regulations, including:
- Merging government properties (Plot Nos. 45 and 47 on Rajpur Road, as well as two bungalows at 8-A & 8-B, Flagstaff Road) into the new mansion.
- Demolition of Type-V flats previously occupied by senior officers and judges.
- Violating ground coverage and floor area ratio (FAR) norms.
- Absence of proper layout plan approvals.
Gupta further alleged that crores of taxpayers’ money were spent on luxury amenities, far exceeding reasonable expenditure limits, raising serious concerns about corruption.
