Congress’ Alka Lamba Accuses Kejriwal Of Spending Rs 33 Crore Taxpayer Money On Luxuries

New Delhi, January 5: Congress candidate for the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, Alka Lamba, launched a strong attack on former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, accusing him of misusing Rs 33 crore of taxpayer money to renovate the Chief Minister’s official residence during the pandemic. Lamba’s remarks come as the BJP continues to intensify its criticism of Kejriwal over the “Sheesh Mahal” controversy.

Lamba, who is contesting against CM Atishi from the Kalkaji constituency, highlighted that the funds were spent on lavish items such as carpets, curtains, luxurious toilets, and even a swimming pool. She pointed out the stark contrast between Kejriwal’s earlier claims, when he had promised not to take a bungalow, car, or security, yet reportedly used public funds for personal luxuries.

Lamba also expressed concern over the timing of this expenditure, especially during a period when Delhi’s residents were facing economic hardship due to inflation. She questioned why such a significant amount was not allocated to alleviate the financial struggles of women in Delhi.

“From the headline of a leading English newspaper, the people of Delhi found out that the so-called ‘common man’ Chief Minister, who had vowed not to accept any luxury facilities, had spent Rs 33 crore of taxpayer money on unnecessary luxuries. This is a serious question, and Arvind Kejriwal must answer for it,” Lamba said.

She also noted that the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), a government body, had audited the expenditure, raising further doubts. Lamba urged Kejriwal to explain his priorities and decisions, emphasizing that the funds could have been better utilized to address issues like inflation and public welfare.

“If this money had been spent to provide relief to women struggling with inflation, it would have made more sense. Kejriwal must answer for this in the future,” she added.

This sharp criticism from Lamba comes just ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections, expected to take place in February. The “Sheesh Mahal” controversy has intensified in recent months, alleging that Kejriwal spent significant funds renovating his official residence during the Covid-19 pandemic, a time when many public development projects were delayed or halted.

Kejriwal, who resigned as Chief Minister in September, vacated the Flagstaff Road bungalow in Civil Lines on October 4. The dates for the upcoming assembly elections are expected to be announced soon.
