Australia Kicks Off ODI World Cup Journey With India Series

New Delhi [India], December 4: Australia’s stand-in captain, Tahlia McGrath, announced that their preparations for the 2025 ODI World Cup will begin with a three-match series against India, starting on Thursday at home.

Currently leading the ICC Women’s Championship points table, Australia holds a three-point lead over third-placed India. With regular captain Alyssa Healy sidelined due to injury, McGrath is determined to lead the team with an aggressive and positive approach to the game.

Recognizing the strength of India’s squad, McGrath emphasized the importance of staying focused on the bigger goal of the series.

“We love to take the game on and play positively, and this series gives us more time to do that,” McGrath said, as quoted by the ICC. “We’re really excited to play at home in a format where we’ve had a lot of success.”

She added, “(India) have superstars in their team. Every match is always hard-fought with crucial moments, and despite playing at home, we expect strong support for India. Our goal is to win the World Cup in 2025, and it all starts tomorrow.”

Ashleigh Gardner will step in as vice-captain for the series. McGrath expressed her enthusiasm about leading the team for the first time over the course of an entire series, highlighting the unique opportunity.

“I’m excited. Leading any side is something I love, and I thrive on it,” she said. “This is my first full series as captain. I’ve filled in at the end of other series or tournaments before, but this is a new experience for me.”

“I’m eager to put my own spin on things. Every captain brings their own style, and I’m excited about working with Ash to implement new ideas, get the best out of this team, and aim for a series win,” McGrath concluded.
