Anupam Kher’s ‘Tanvi The Great’ to Shine at New York Indian Film Festival 2025

After a heartwarming Cannes premiere, Anupam Kher’s directorial Tanvi The Great heads to the U.S. for gala screenings in New York, Austin, and Houston.

Mumbai, June 16: Acclaimed actor-director Anupam Kher is gearing up for the Gala premiere of his directorial venture Tanvi The Great at the New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF) 2025 on June 19, adding another global milestone to the film’s growing recognition.

In a video message shared on his Instagram handle, Kher enthusiastically revealed his U.S. screening schedule for the film. The premiere in New York will be followed by showings in Austin (June 21) and Houston (June 22), in collaboration with the Indo-American Arts Council (IAAC).

“We have a Gala premiere of Tanvi The Great in New York, organised by NYIFF and IAAC. Thank you very much for inviting us. Then we’re going to Austin and Houston,” Kher shared.

He added that this marks his return to New York after 4-5 years, where he previously spent three years filming the hit medical drama New Amsterdam.

“I’m excited to show our film to my people and friends and a wonderful gathering at this festival,” Kher noted.

The emotionally stirring film had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival 2025, where it was met with a standing ovation and an emotional audience response.
Speaking about the reception, Kher said:

“I was overwhelmed by the reaction of people. They clapped during the film, laughed, cried, and stayed back for a Q&A. It’s a beautiful feeling when your work touches hearts.”

Kher also reflected on the difficult journey of making the film, revealing that initial financiers backed out, but he pressed on due to his deep conviction.

“The success of the film internationally proves that if you do something with passion and honesty, even against odds, it finds its audience. I had to make this film—it was my conviction.”

About the Film:

Tanvi The Great tells the powerful story of Tanvi Raina, a 21-year-old woman with autism, who embarks on a determined journey to fulfil her late father’s dream—to stand atop Siachen, the world’s highest battlefield, and salute the Indian flag. The film challenges societal limitations and institutional biases against people with autism in the armed forces.

The lead role is portrayed by debutant Shubhangi Dutt, alongside a powerful ensemble cast featuring Karan Tacker, Boman Irani, and Anupam Kher himself. The film is set for a nationwide release on July 18.
