Amararam Gujar Appointed As India’s Next High Commissioner To Malawi

New Delhi [India]: Senior Indian Foreign Service officer Amararam Gujar has been appointed as India’s next High Commissioner to the Republic of Malawi, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Tuesday.

Gujar, a 2008-batch IFS officer, is currently serving as the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy in Rome, Italy.
“Amararam Gujar (IFS: 2008), presently Deputy Chief of Mission, Rome, has been appointed as the next High Commissioner of India to the Republic of Malawi,” the MEA stated in its official release.

He is expected to assume his new role in Malawi shortly.

India and Malawi share warm and friendly bilateral relations dating back to Malawi’s independence in 1964. India was among the first countries to establish diplomatic ties with the southeastern African nation. A resident Indian mission was initially set up in Malawi soon after, but it was closed in 1993 due to administrative reasons.

Despite the closure, diplomatic engagement continued, with India’s Mission in Zambia concurrently accredited to Malawi until February 2012. India re-established its High Commission in Lilongwe, Malawi, in March 2012. Malawi, in turn, opened its own Mission in New Delhi in February 2007.

Gujar’s appointment is expected to strengthen India’s ongoing developmental partnership, capacity building initiatives, and people-to-people connections with Malawi.
