LOC Wildfire Contained: Massive Blaze In J&K’s Gurez Valley Brought Under Control After Manual Operation

A significant forest fire that had been raging along the Line of Control (LoC) in the remote Gurez valley of Bandipore, Jammu and Kashmir, was finally brought under control on Monday evening, according to local authorities.

The Battle Against the Blaze

The wildfire, which broke out in a challenging remote, mountainous area, had been a primary concern for authorities due to its rapid spread.

  • Extent of Damage: Officials confirmed that the fire spread across an area of 20 to 30 hectares, severely affecting forested land and undergrowth before being contained.
  • Vulnerability Factors: The fire was intensely fueled by dry grass and the high fuel loads present in the forest, exacerbated by prevailing dry weather conditions. Officials noted that the Bandipora district is inherently vulnerable to such fire incidents.

Tireless Manual Efforts Required

The firefighting operation proved exceptionally difficult due to the terrain and restricted access near the LoC.

  • Joint Response: Containing the blaze required a coordinated, tireless effort from joint teams, including personnel from the Forest and Wildlife Departments, the Indian Army (due to the proximity to the LoC), and dedicated local volunteers.
  • Manual Methods: Crucially, the teams were forced to rely entirely on manual methods for firefighting, as the rugged, remote terrain lacks the road connectivity necessary for fire tenders to reach the site.

Mopping Operations Underway

Following the successful containment, authorities have shifted focus to ensuring the fire is fully extinguished and secured against potential reignition.

  • Involved Agencies: The forest protection force, forest employees, and civil authorities are currently conducting extensive “mopping operations” at the site. This involves checking for and extinguishing any remaining hot spots or embers.
  • Investigation: The exact cause of the fire remains unknown and is under investigation by authorities.

Officials have issued an advisory urging anyone planning to enter forest areas to exercise extreme cautionavoid starting fires, and to obtain permission from the concerned range officer or Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) whenever possible.
