New Delhi [India]: On the occasion of World Health Day 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the vital importance of good health, calling it the “ultimate fortune and wealth.” Reaffirming the government’s commitment to building a healthier India, PM Modi encouraged citizens to embrace healthier lifestyles and reduce risk factors associated with chronic illnesses such as obesity.
“On World Health Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to building a healthier world. Our Government will keep focusing on healthcare and invest in different aspects of people’s well-being. Good health is the foundation of every thriving society!” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).
In alignment with this year’s World Health Organization (WHO) theme, “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures,” PM Modi shared a video message raising awareness about lifestyle diseases, particularly obesity, which he called a growing health threat in India.
Obesity Concerns: 440 Million Indians at Risk by 2050
Quoting the Sanskrit maxim “Aarogyam Paramam Bhagyam” (Health is the ultimate wealth), the Prime Minister expressed concern over a report that predicts more than 440 million Indians may suffer from obesity by 2050 if current trends continue.
“These numbers are scary. We have to work on that from now onwards. We have to cut our cooking oil consumption by 10 per cent. This would be a huge step in cutting obesity. We have to make exercise a part of our lives. Keeping yourself fit will be a huge contribution to Vikshit Bharat,” PM Modi urged.
India’s Health Progress: Ayushman Bharat, Digital Health, and NHM
As India observes World Health Day, the government highlighted major initiatives like Ayushman Bharat, the National Health Mission (NHM), and digital health infrastructure expansion, which have significantly contributed to:
- Improved maternal and child health
- Universal healthcare access
- Stronger public health systems
- Increased awareness around preventive healthcare
According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, continued efforts are being made to reduce disease burdens, strengthen primary healthcare services, and make wellness a national movement.
