Spanish drama Sorda wins Best Feature Film, while German documentary Die Möllner Briefe takes the top prize in the Panorama Dokumente category at Berlinale 2025.
Berlin (Germany), February 23: The Berlin International Film Festival has announced the winners of the 2025 Panorama Audience Awards, with Spanish drama Sorda (Deaf) directed by Eva Libertad taking home the Best Feature Film award, and German documentary Die Möllner Briefe (The Mölln Letters) by Martina Priessner securing the top prize in the Panorama Dokumente category.
The prestigious Panorama Audience Awards were determined entirely by audience votes, reflecting the festivalgoers’ appreciation for the most compelling storytelling at Berlinale 2025.
About ‘Sorda’ – Best Feature Film
Directed by Eva Libertad, Sorda follows the emotional journey of Angela (played by Miriam Garlo), a deaf woman in Spain, and her husband Hector (played by Álvaro Cervantes) as they prepare for the birth of their first child. Angela, deeply connected with her deaf community, faces immense pressure from her hearing parents to wear hearing aids.
As she steps into motherhood, she begins questioning whether she will be able to fully connect with her child and navigate the world as a deaf mother. These fears add strain to her relationship with Hector, creating a deeply moving and thought-provoking narrative.
Produced by Distinto Films, Nexus CreaFilms, and A Contracorriente Films, Sorda is being sold worldwide by Madrid-based Latido Films, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
About ‘Die Möllner Briefe’ – Best Documentary
Martina Priessner’s documentary Die Möllner Briefe (The Mölln Letters) revisits the 1992 neo-Nazi arson attack in the German town of Mölln, where Turkish-German families were targeted, resulting in the deaths of three people and severe injuries to others.
The film follows the survivors—most notably Ibrahim Arslan, who was a child during the attack—as they uncover hundreds of condolence letters sent by the public but never delivered to the victims’ families. Priessner explores the long-term trauma of the attack, the mishandling of historical memory, and the bureaucratic failures that denied justice and closure for the victims.
Produced by Berlin-based inselfilm production, Die Möllner Briefe is being distributed globally by New Docs, reported The Hollywood Reporter.
