Severe Mud and Structural Damage Hinder Search for Trapped Workers
Nagarkurnool (Telangana), February 23: Rescue operations at the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel suffered a major setback on Sunday as teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) struggled to access the collapsed section. The presence of thick mud and structural instability inside the tunnel has made the mission increasingly challenging.
“There’s no chance to reach the spot inside the tunnel. It has completely collapsed, and mud levels are reaching up to the knees. We will have to reassess our approach,” an SDRF official stated.
Eight Workers Feared Trapped as Operations Intensify
The collapse occurred early Saturday morning when a three-meter section of the tunnel roof caved in at the 14th km mark near Domalapenta, Nagarkurnool district. The accident took place just four days after construction work resumed following a long pause. While most workers managed to escape, at least eight remain trapped inside.
SDRF, NDRF, and officials from Singareni Collieries inspected the site but were forced to retreat due to unstable conditions. Emergency teams have been deployed, and an Engineer Regiment from the Indian Army’s Infantry Division in Secunderabad has been placed on standby with heavy excavation equipment to aid in rescue efforts.
Rescue Operations: Army, NDRF, and SDRF on High Alert
The Army has mobilized its Engineer Task Force (ETF) to support the rescue mission. The task force includes:
- Specialist engineering teams
- A medical detachment from the Army Medical Corps
- High-capacity water pumps and armoured hoses
- Ambulances and other emergency equipment
Congress MP from Nagarkurnool, Mallu Ravi, described the incident as “very unfortunate,” confirming that while 60 workers were present at the time, all but eight managed to escape without serious injuries.
“145 personnel from NDRF and 120 from SDRF are working tirelessly to save those trapped. Oxygen is being pumped into the tunnel, and water inside is being removed using a 100 HP pump. A larger 250 KV generator is also being brought in to assist,” he added.
PM Modi Assures Full Central Support
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and assured full assistance from the central government for the rescue operations. The situation is being closely monitored by HQ Telangana & Andhra Sub Area (TASA) and the Infantry Division HQ, ensuring smooth coordination between the Army, state officials, and disaster response teams.
As authorities race against time, the rescue teams are making every possible effort to reach the trapped workers and ensure their safe evacuation.
