Maha Kumbh Mela Witnesses Over 1.98 Million Pilgrims In A Day; Spiritual Energy Unites Devotees

Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh) [India]: The Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the world’s largest spiritual gatherings, continues to attract millions of devotees. According to official data released by the Uttar Pradesh government, 1.98 million pilgrims visited the Mela on Saturday by 10 a.m., marking a significant turnout on the event’s sixth day.

Highlights of the Day

  • Sacred Dips at Triveni Sangam: Over 10 lakh Kalpvasis and 9.84 lakh pilgrims took a holy dip at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers, reaffirming the spiritual significance of the tradition.
  • Total Attendance: As of January 17, more than 73 million pilgrims have visited the Maha Kumbh Mela.

“Golden Baba” and His Unique Devotion

Swami Narayan Nand Giri Maharaj, known as “Golden Baba,” captured attention by wearing over 6.8 kilograms of gold jewellery. A revered Mahamandaleshwar of the Niranjani Akhada, Golden Baba explained that the jewellery, adorned with rudraksha, coral, crystals, and precious stones, is dedicated to various Hindu deities, including Natraj, Narishma, and Bhadrakali.

The spiritual leader emphasized the significance of his jewellery, stating, “It gives me positive energy and is essential during puja. The rudrakshas were gifted by my father, and their energy reflects on others as well.”

International Participation

The Maha Kumbh has drawn devotees from across the globe. Laurene Powell, widow of former Apple CEO Steve Jobs, has reportedly been spending time at the Mela, deeply influenced by Hindu teachings. Her spiritual guide, Swami Kailashanand Giri, shared that Powell aspires to embrace Sanatan Dharma and immerse herself in its traditions.

The Spirit of Unity

The Mela’s vibrant atmosphere showcases the power of spirituality to transcend barriers. Pilgrims of all castes, classes, and languages—rich or poor, men, women, or transgender individuals—come together to participate in Kalpavas, an age-old tradition of devotion.

The first Amrit Snan (sacred dip) on Makar Sankranti witnessed a mix of Indian and foreign devotees. The confluence resonated with devotional bhajans sung by pilgrims from various parts of the world, contributing to the event’s sanctity.

The next significant bathing days include:

  • Mauni Amavasya (Second Shahi Snan): January 29
