Zubeen Garg Death Case: Murder Charges Added, Festival Organiser Moves Supreme Court

The probe into the sudden death of singer Zubeen Garg has taken a sharp turn, with the Assam CID formally adding murder charges to the FIR. Special DGP (CID) Munna Prasad Gupta confirmed on Thursday that a 10-member SIT is handling the high-profile case.

Zubeen, one of Assam’s most celebrated voices, passed away on September 19 in Singapore, just a day before his scheduled performance at the North East India Festival (NEIF). The event, designed to highlight the cultural richness of the region, was organised by Shyamkanu Mahanta, who is now one of the main accused.

Mahanta, along with Zubeen’s manager Siddharth Sharma, was arrested on Wednesday. On Thursday, the CID made two more arrests — singer Amritprabha Mahanta and musician Shekhar Goswami, both of whom were reportedly close to Zubeen and had been questioned earlier on September 27.

Meanwhile, Shyamkanu Mahanta has moved the Supreme Court seeking a transfer of the investigation, even as pressure mounts with new arrests and fresh charges.

The case continues to stir widespread emotion in Assam and beyond, with fans and the music fraternity demanding a transparent and thorough probe into the beloved singer’s mysterious death.
