Imphal (Manipur) [India]: Members of the Zomi and Kuki communities voluntarily surrendered 16 rifles and ammunition in Manipur’s Churachandpur district on Saturday, following an appeal by Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla.
On February 20, Governor Bhalla urged all communities to surrender looted police weapons and illegally held arms within seven days, warning of strict action against those who failed to comply.
Successful Engagement Leads to Surrender
In response to the appeal, Assam Rifles, in coordination with the Police, CRPF, State Intelligence Agencies, and the State Administration, engaged with Zomi and Kuki community leaders to address security concerns and provide assurances of safety. Officials emphasized the benefits of de-weaponization for regional peace, leading to a breakthrough as community leaders voluntarily surrendered a significant quantity of arms and ammunition.
On February 22, 2025, the first batch of surrendered weapons was handed over in Tuibong Village, Churachandpur District, in the presence of top officials from Assam Rifles, CRPF, State Civil Administration, Police, and State Intelligence Agencies.
Weapons and Ammunition Surrendered
The surrendered cache included:
- 16 firearms, including:
- One M-16 Rifle
- One 7.62 mm SLR
- Two AK Rifles
- Three INSAS Rifles
- Two M-79 40mm Under Barrel Grenade Launchers (UBGL)
- One 9mm Carbine Machine Gun
- One 51 mm Mortar
- Three .303 Rifles
- Two Single Barrel Rifles
- Ammunition and explosives:
- 64 gelatine sticks
- 10 rounds of 60 mm Pumpi (improvised mortar) ammunition
- 17 rounds of AK ammunition
- 40 rounds of 5.56 mm rifle ammunition
- Three 9 mm caliber rounds
A Step Towards Peace
Officials emphasized that this surrender is a stepping stone in the peace process, aligning with the Central Government’s long-standing efforts to bring stability to the region. The success of this initiative is expected to encourage other armed groups to follow suit, promoting peace and development in Manipur.
A meticulously planned effort involving Assam Rifles, Police, State Civil Administration, CRPF, and State Intelligence Agencies aims to further de-escalate tensions and inspire the youth to abandon arms in favor of a more secure and prosperous future.
