New Delhi: Food delivery giant Zomato and quick-commerce platform Blinkit achieved their highest-ever delivery numbers on New Year’s Eve, despite recent calls for a nationwide strike by gig workers. Sharing the update on Thursday, founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal revealed that the two platforms together delivered over 75 lakh orders, marking a record-breaking operational milestone.
Expressing gratitude to delivery partners, Goyal said many riders “showed up despite intimidation, stood their ground, and chose honest work and progress.” He added that if a system were truly unfair, so many people would not willingly choose to work within it.
“Please don’t get swept away by narratives pushed by vested interests,” Goyal wrote, referring to criticism around gig worker treatment and the strike calls circulating over the past week.
Gig Economy As A Major Job Engine
Highlighting the broader impact of India’s gig economy, Goyal said platforms like Zomato and Blinkit have become one of the country’s largest organised job creators. He added that the true benefit would be visible in the coming years when the children of delivery partners, supported by steady income and education, participate in India’s workforce and contribute to national growth.
Zomato and Blinkit delivered at a record pace yesterday, unaffected by calls for strikes that many of us heard over the past few days.

Record-Breaking Numbers Without Extra Incentives
Goyal also shared operational figures, noting that over 4.5 lakh delivery partners worked on New Year’s Eve, successfully catering to over 63 lakh customers across India.
Remarkably, he said this milestone was achieved without any additional incentives offered to delivery partners.
He also acknowledged the assistance of local law enforcement agencies in ensuring smooth functioning across cities and preventing disruptions by what he termed a “small number of miscreants”.
Strike Call By Gig Workers’ Union
Earlier this week, the Gig and Platform Service Workers Union had announced a nationwide strike for December 31, demanding fair wages, better working conditions and social security benefits for gig and platform-based workers.
The union urged delivery workers, app-based service providers and freelancers to log off platforms to demonstrate solidarity. It claimed that over 1.7 lakh workers had confirmed participation in the planned protest.
However, New Year’s Eve demand appeared unaffected, with platforms functioning at full scale and achieving unprecedented delivery volumes.
