Brussels [Belgium]: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed profound gratitude to European leaders for their unwavering support during a crucial summit in Brussels, as reported by Al Jazeera. Standing alongside top EU officials, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa, Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine was not alone in its fight against Russia’s invasion.
“We are very thankful that we are not alone. And these are not just words,” Zelenskyy stated, underscoring the importance of the solidarity displayed by the EU. “It’s very important you made a strong signal to the Ukrainian people.”
Von der Leyen highlighted the gravity of the situation, describing it as a “watershed moment” for Europe. “Europe faces a clear and present danger, and therefore Europe has to be able to protect itself, to defend itself. We have to put Ukraine in a position to protect itself and to push for lasting and just peace,” she told reporters.
The summit, attended by leaders of all 27 EU member states, was focused on defense and security strategies in response to the escalating conflict in Ukraine. This meeting followed a tense interaction between Zelenskyy and former US President Donald Trump in Washington DC, which reportedly revolved around security guarantees for Ukraine.
During a meeting with Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever, Zelenskyy expressed appreciation for Belgium’s decision to transfer F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine. He described this move as a significant step to protect Ukrainian lives.
“We greatly appreciate these strong steps to protect Ukrainian lives. I informed the Prime Minister about the preparation of a European plan to bring a just peace closer and invited him to take part in its development,” Zelenskyy said. The discussions also covered defense needs, particularly the supply of artillery systems and ammunition, and investments in Ukraine’s domestic production of long-range drones and missiles.
Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine’s aspirations for EU integration, expressing gratitude for Belgium’s steadfast support in this regard.
In a surprising turn, it was reported that Zelenskyy had previously pressed US President Donald Trump for a security guarantee, which initially triggered a strong reaction from Trump. However, Trump softened his stance after Ukraine agreed to sign a significant mineral deal with the United States.
