Kyiv [Ukraine], May 20: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday accused Russia of using diplomacy as a delay tactic, saying it is attempting to “buy time” to continue its war and occupation. He affirmed Ukraine’s commitment to a genuine peace process but warned that Moscow’s unrealistic demands must be met with tough consequences.
In a post on X, Zelenskyy wrote,
“It is obvious that Russia is trying to buy time in order to continue its war and occupation. We are working with our partners to ensure that pressure forces Russians to change their behaviour.”
Zelenskyy shared details of his conversation with Finnish President Alexander Stubb, highlighting efforts to coordinate diplomatic outreach and maintain unified pressure on Moscow.
“The key point is that diplomacy aimed at peace must be well-coordinated and focused on tangible outcomes. Sanctions matter, and I am grateful to everyone who is making them more biting for those responsible for this war,” he added.
Ceasefire Talks and Caution
Zelenskyy reiterated that Ukraine is prepared to engage in peace negotiations, but warned that only realistic proposals should be on the table.
“The war must end at the negotiating table. Ukraine is ready for any format that delivers results. But if Russia continues to push unrealistic demands and stall progress, there must be consequences,” he stressed.
This statement follows recent high-level calls, including a discussion with US President Donald Trump, who has shown interest in facilitating a ceasefire agreement.
Trump’s Mediation and Putin’s Response
Following talks with Trump and European leaders, Zelenskyy expressed doubts over Russia’s sincerity, saying he is still unsure whether Moscow truly wants peace.
“As I understood from our dialogue with President Trump, the Russian side wants to send us a memo on how they see the principles. It’s not just about a ceasefire—they want more conditions,” Zelenskyy said.
On the Russian side, President Vladimir Putin, after a two-hour phone call with Trump, described the exchange as “productive and candid.”
“I expressed my gratitude to the President of the United States for helping to restart direct talks between Russia and Ukraine. The Ukrainian side had earlier thwarted such efforts in 2022,” Putin remarked.
Putin claimed that Russia remains open to peace negotiations, and praised US involvement in seeking a settlement.
Meanwhile, Trump commented that he is doing “the best he can” to bring an end to the conflict, underscoring the renewed diplomatic momentum led by the United States.
