After the huge success of his 2022 movie Barbarian, filmmaker Zach Cregger is back with his newest horror movie, Weapons. Critics have already given the movie, which stars Julia Garner and Josh Brolin, a lot of praise and called it the “horror movie of the summer.” Early reviews and teasers promise a dark and scary story that has fans buzzing with excitement.
A Scary Mystery in a Town
The story of Weapons takes place in the calm town of Maybrook, until something horrible and unexplainable happens. At 2:17 a.m., seventeen kids from the same class unexpectedly disappear. All that’s left is shaky video of them rushing around like they were in a trance. There is no evidence of foul play, thus the teacher, Justine Gandy (Julia Garner), is the main suspect because all of the missing children were her students. As the village turns against her, she joins forces with Archer Graff (Josh Brolin), a father whose son is one of the missing, to find out what really happened to them.
A Critical Hit with a Star-Studded Cast
Weapons has already gotten a lot of attention from critics. It has a great score on Rotten Tomatoes and reviews have called it a “righteous, fully actualized genre-bender.” Critics have commended Cregger for taking “unbearable tension and dark humor to a new level of razor-sharpness.”
Along with Julia Garner and Josh Brolin, the movie has a great supporting cast that includes
Alden Ehrenreich plays a police officer in the area.
Cary Christopher played Alex Lilly, the lone kid from Gandy’s class who didn’t go missing.
Andrew Marcus is the school principal, and Benedict Wong plays him.
Amy Madigan plays Alex’s aunt, Gladys Lilly.
Austin Abrams plays James, a homeless drug user and thief.
People are calling the movie an ambitious “horror epic” with a more personal story for Cregger. One of the most interesting things about it is how it tells its story from the points of view of many different characters.
