Washington DC [US], May 22: Zach Braff is officially set to reprise his iconic role as John “JD” Dorian in the upcoming reboot of the medical comedy series ‘Scrubs’, now in development at ABC, according to a report by Variety.
The revival is in early stages, with original series creator Bill Lawrence returning as executive producer. While Lawrence is currently under an overall deal with Warner Bros. Television—producing acclaimed series like Shrinking, Ted Lasso, and Bad Monkey—he originally developed Scrubs at Disney’s 20th Television, now behind the reboot project.
Rumors of a Scrubs reunion or reboot have circulated for years, with cast and creators frequently expressing interest. The development news follows speculation from late 2023 about the show’s potential return.
Originally premiering in 2001 on NBC, Scrubs became a cult hit, airing for seven seasons on NBC before moving to ABC for its eighth and final full season. A ninth season followed under the title Scrubs: Med School, with limited appearances by the original cast. Braff appeared in six of the 13 episodes of that final season.
The original ensemble included:
- Zach Braff as JD
- Donald Faison as Turk
- Sarah Chalke as Elliot
- Judy Reyes as Carla
- John C. McGinley as Dr. Cox
- Ken Jenkins as Dr. Kelso
- Neil Flynn as The Janitor
Set at the fictional Sacred Heart Hospital, the show followed JD and his colleagues navigating life, medicine, and friendship, all through JD’s quirky internal monologue and narration. The reboot is expected to revive the show’s signature tone and format.
As of now, Zach Braff is the only cast member confirmed to return, with no announcements yet about the involvement of other fan-favorite characters.
